
While looking for jobs and preparing for interviews, David heard about the Youth Guarantee’s First Challenge programme, a Slovenian-specific initiative funded by the Youth Employment initiative. He felt the programme’s one-on-one assistance and training was just the boost his self-esteem and job search needed.
‘The training prepared me to go into a job interview with something to offer,’ he says. ‘It also provided long-term cooperation and stability for both my potential employer and myself.’
Now employed as an assistant project manager at a non-profit organisation, David coordinates all communication activities – including member engagement. Since starting this job, David says he feels calmer and more stable in his life and more creative at work. ‘I think the Youth Guarantee’s most important added value is the motivation it gives you to go find employment,’ he adds.
About the programmes
In Slovenia, the First Challenge initiative encourages employers to hire young people 29 years or younger. It consists of a three-month trial period at a workplace. Afterwards, if the employer and employee mutually agree, the programme provides for one year of subsidised employment.
The Youth Guarantee offers a new approach to reducing the level of youth unemployment by ensuring that all young people under 25 get a good quality, concrete offer of a job, apprenticeship, traineeship or continuing education. The scheme requires this to be on the table within 4 months of the young person leaving formal education or of becoming unemployed.
