The right chemistry: Italian pharma specialist feels at home in Sweden

Moving to Sweden for a five-month training programme turned out to be the best decision Alessia Bianchet ever made.

Alessia, 27, from San Vito al Tagliamento in northeastern Italy, is enjoying life at Mölnlycke Health Care in Gothenburg, where she has now begun a full-time position in the company’s research and development department.

Alessia graduated in pharmaceutical chemistry and technology in 2015 and started looking for a job in the pharma sector in Italy. After eight months she had still not found a position, and so enrolled in her local Youth Guarantee programme, an EU initiative that helps under-25s find jobs and training.

She came into contact with a manager at AstraZeneca, the pharmaceutical multinational, which works with Mölnlycke at its BioVentureHub in Gothenburg. Alessia was offered a place on Mölnlycke’s training programme, which she began in February this year.

“They were happy to have young people eager to learn in their team,” says Alessia. “With great excitement – and equally great fears – unsatisfied with the poor employment opportunities for young people in Italy, I decided to leave. I wanted to prove to myself that I was up to the challenge.”

She was supported in her move by EURES Italy, in particular by EURES Staff member Stefania Garofalo. Through the Youth Guarantee programme in her region, Friuli Venezia Giulia, she got financial support for the time spent training abroad.

Mölnlycke is a global healthcare company with 7,400 employees around the world; at the headquarters, where Alessia is based, there are about 400. They’ve quickly become like a second family to her.

“Thanks to the Youth Guarantee and EURES, I’ve discovered a culture that I would never have considered for a possible future,” Alessia says.

“My life has changed a lot. I live in a country that has given me so much, and that I love. I have a job I adore, and I work in a team of people I’m very close to. I’ve met a lot of people, some of whom I have formed strong friendships with, and they’ve taught me so much. Moving to Sweden is one of the best decisions I've ever made.”

Stefania adds: “As a EURES Adviser, it’s a pleasure to give advice to such motivated, highly skilled and enthusiastic people as Alessia. And it’s fantastic when you see a woman reaching her goals and succeeding in a career in science, technology, engineering and maths, which is in high demand in Europe.”
