More than 200 domestic and foreign exhibitors took part in April’s Job Expo 2017 in Nitra, Slovakia, with 50 of them presenting job opportunities abroad at the European Job Days pavilion. Among the exhibitors were employers, representatives of private employment services and EU information networks based in Slovakia. There were also EURES Advisers from 10 countries.

Serge Terburg is area manager, South, for the Alertec Group in the Netherlands, which specialises in recruitment for the technical and construction sectors. “We were welcomed with open arms by EURES,” he says. “We spoke to lots of jobseekers, and the first workers have already started with our client. The high qualifications of Slovak workers, together with good language skills in English, means we and our clients are very satisfied.”

Stefan Liebig, managing director of Slovakian jobs agency Backup, was also pleased with the results. “We already have three candidates who have joined a leading river cruise line and are happy about their new employment,” he says. “Additionally, we have four candidates at the second interview stage for German river cruise line A-ROSA. For ocean cruise ships, we are in contract preparation with three candidates. So overall we can say it was successful and we have been able to reach out to potential clients.”

During the two-day fair, 6,500 people visited the European Job Days pavilion for information on working abroad. Among the exhibitors were EURES Advisers from Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Finland and Lithuania.

Swedish EURES Adviser Olof Person says: “The fair offered some very relevant candidates for what Sweden needs. We must consider not only the quantity but also the quality. I actually met a handful of candidates who spoke some Swedish, which doesn’t happen very often. We look forward to coming back next year.”

Annabelle Schmitt, EURES Adviser based in Dortmund, says: “Most of the jobseekers we spoke to – at least fifty or sixty – were interested in hospitality. Outside of bottleneck sectors such as logistics, construction and IT, there were several teachers with excellent German skills interested in working in Germany, one laboratory chemist and one kindergarten teacher. We will contact all the candidates who gave us their CVs and would like support with their job search.”

Exhibitors offered a total of 4,258 job vacancies, mainly in construction, health care and hospitality, and professions such as carpenters, metalworkers, welders, operators and drivers. Jobs on cruise ships across Europe were a new feature this year.

Overseas employers had 435 interviews with jobseekers during the two days of the fair and plan to commence employment with 294 successful candidates. In a letter to exhibitors after the event, EURES Slovakia National Coordinator Matúš Caban, said, “We are confident that this year’s job fair will have helped you discover the right candidates for your vacancies, and also look forward to welcoming you to next year’s fair!”
