One-Stop Shop means better access for cross-border jobseekers

Things are busy at EURES-T Upper Rhine. The office covers four regions spread across Germany, France and Switzerland, operates in French and German and serves nearly 100 000 cross-border workers.

‘Jobseekers from across the cross-border region can now submit requests by simply sending an email or calling either the German, Swiss or French phone number,’ says EURES-T Upper Rhine General Secretary Beat Britt. ‘This language-based intake system makes sure a jobseeker’s initial contact with EURES-T is in their native language.’

So if you are in the region and want to know more about jobseeking in Germany, unemployment, the status of cross-border commuters, jobseeking in Switzerland and cross-border apprenticeships, you now have a central number to call or address to mail.

Central command

When the One-Stop Shop’s central desk receives a request, it creates a detailed registration that includes an evaluation and analysis. For advice and general requests concerning the cross-border labour market, the bilingual central desk responds directly. More specific requests, however, are forwarded to the appropriate EURES Adviser, cross-border apprenticeship expert or other competent agency. ‘With the One-Stop Shop, we can guarantee continuous availability and a timely response,’ says Britt.

Incoming requests from all four regions are directed to the One-Stop Shop’s central desk, where it is registered, evaluated and analysed. For advice and general requests concerning the cross-border labour market, the bilingual central desk will respond directly. More specific requests are forwarded to the appropriate EURES Adviser, cross-border apprenticeship expert or other competent agency.

Benefits for all

The new system benefits both jobseekers and employers. According to Britt, because the One-Stop Shop ensures that requests get to the right person with the right competences and language skills, jobseekers benefit from better access to up-to-date information on living and working conditions for the entire region. ‘From the very start, a jobseeker has immediate access to the right EURES/EURES-T contact – an accessibility that carries on throughout their work with us,’ he says.

Employers also benefit from the system. ‘Employers often seek specific information about the workforce potential of the cross-border labour market, and the One-Stop Shop gets their queries directly to the EURES-T contact best equipped to provide such information,’ adds Britt.
