Fortune favours the brave: the story of one Romanian car dealer in Sweden

There is never a bad time to reboot your career in a foreign country. At any rate, Nicolae Cazanescu seems to think so. When his 17-year career in dealing cars needed a fresh coat of paint, he turned to EURES Romania to help him tailor

Fortune favours the brave: the story of one Romanian car dealer in Sweden

“When 37-year-old car painter Nicolae, embarked on his overseas work adventure, he came to us” says Elena Tane, EURES Adviser at Olt County Agency for Employment in Romania. EURES had already helped him out in the past, but this time round he needed something different. So along he went to his local EURES office, to ask for help in finding a new job away from home. Nicolae was looking for a way to give his career the fresh boost he longed for, and finding the proper support gave him the belief that it is always the right time to start something new.

Valued support

Easier said than done, you could say, and a potential job shift or relocation are always giant life steps. This is the moment when you are likely to look for professional advice, which is precisely what Elena Tane’s role consists of. Providing Nicolae with real help in his new endeavour, she laid out all the necessary procedures and documents in a simple, intuitive, user-friendly way. “He came across as a very communicative, motivated and sociable person, willing to work and grow”, she underlines. Under EURES’ guidance, Nicolae completed a number of simple, yet highly useful, tweaks such as brushing-up his CV and accurately completing key administrative documents prior to sending off his application to a targeted employer.

Experience is king

It is worth mentioning that this was not the first time Nicolae set about working and living abroad. He had previously spent two and a half years in Spain in his main area of expertise; painting vehicles. His time in Spain also gave him the opportunity to add another new skill when he learnt how to install air-conditioning in cars. This new know-how provided him with the surge in confidence that was necessary to navigate an international environment.

Unsure which way the wind will blow

It comes as no surprise that Nicolae knew how to put these skills to good use in his new job. Shortly after his application was sent, his new employer Mr. Titu Palcau – who also happened to be Romanian, managing a company called Sc Peter & Lili SRL - a car repair shop in Växjö, Sweden – contacted him. To his delight, he received a positive response about his application, and a mere two months after initiating his EURES job search, Nicolae began his new job.

Via EURES, Nicolae found a full-time job in Sweden in his area of expertise; with the additional bonus of feeling at home and among friends, despite being thousands of kilometres from Romania.

So, what’s next for Nicolae? Well interestingly we found out that he was recently promoted to team leader, which means more responsibilities, new skills and new challenges!
