EURES Sweden: Giving Writers Hope

EURES Sweden have been opening doors for Swedish writers across Europe with an exciting recruitment event held in Poland.

EURES Sweden: Giving Writers Hope

The event was a collaborative effort between the Public Employment Service Cultural Media at EURES Sweden and the Polish Film Institute. Their shared goal was to bring Swedish screenwriters face to face with Polish producers looking for new talent.

The event, held on the 23 March in Warsaw, aimed to bridge the gap between the creative minds, and those with the creative means.

The Swedish Employment Cultural Service invited applications from Swedish screenwriters from all genres across fiction including drama, crime, young adult, and children. From 60 hopeful and talented applicants, 11 screenwriters were selected.  These finalists then travelled to Poland to attend the event at the Polish Film Institute’s Kino Rejs, to meet with Polish producers who had been invited to attend.

The writers each had 8 minutes to pitch their scripts to the producers, and afterwards attend a reception where they could network and make business connections.

The outcome is expected to continue the success from previous writers’ pitches held in Berlin.  Feedback collected from the participants from the previous four events spanning 2013-2016 showed that 20% of them signed a contract with a producer.

This is a great result for an industry which is notoriously difficult to break into.  Screenwriting is often considered to be the toughest creative career-nuts to crack, as it differs to other writing mediums in that it has no option of self-publishing. Success is very much dependent on getting your work in the hands of the right person at the right time, but even just getting read seems like a near impossible task.

It is these obstacles that EURES Sweden hopes to overcome with events such as this.  The aim is to provide a more accessible platform for Swedish writers, and to enable them to make connections with industry professionals and gain employment across Europe.

This recent event was the second held in Poland, and others are planned for the near future in other European countries such as Berlin and London.
