The seasonal job mobility programme is facilitated by EURES Bulgaria in close cooperation with EURES Portugal. The initiative helps Portuguese employers hire temporary workers in agriculture during the high season, when they suffer a severe shortage of staff.
Bulgarian farmers are lending a hand to their fellow workers in the beautiful setting of the Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. The Algarve offers a huge variety of seasonal work opportunities across agriculture and tourism, against a backdrop of picturesque coastlines and a wonderful climate.
Bulgaria's Public Employment Services are responsible for organising the entire process, providing full recruitment services for both jobseekers and employers.
They provide information to potential applicants, are involved in the pre-selection of candidates, help organise in-country interviews and provide extensive information on the living and working conditions to approved applicants. The farmers are assisted by EURES Advisers every step of the way – from the application process to the interviews, throughout the journey to Portugal, and even on their return.
But of course, the EURES Bulgaria team don’t do all of this alone. They have the help and support of their colleagues in Portugal.
“It is important to mention the very close cooperation with the EURES team in Portugal, who help a lot with the communication with the employers,” comments Daniela Piryankova, a EURES Adviser and training coordinator at the Bulgaria's Public Employment Services.
Not only do they help with the logistics and employer communication, but they also make on-site visits to the farms to make sure that the Bulgarian workers have everything they need.
It is down to this strong relationship and close attention to detail that the seasonal workers project between Bulgaria and Portugal has enjoyed great success over the past three years.
